This summer has flown by so quickly. I feel like so much has happened, but I also feel like so much hasn’t happened, and so much more is supposed to happen. With the first day of senior year coming up in exactly a month, we’re scrambling to finish up the things we’ve yet to finish before I lose him again to engineering school.
Christopher and Corbett are moving away in 3 weeks which is going to be very sad. We’re trying not to dwell on it, but in the meantime, we’re filling up our schedules with dinners and such. On Saturday we’ll take them to Charlottesville. Mom’s coming to visit in a few weeks. She’s pretty low maintenance as far as entertainment, but Chris really wants to have a big barbecue while she’s here. We’ll likely have a bunch of friends over, as well as his cousins who will be visiting from Michigan. It has the potential to be fun. Any time moms are in the mix, there will need to be a lot of beer and wine involved. My mom, in particular is the most fun when Jägermeister is involved. Just one shot. I told you she was low maintenance.
We have been thinking about what to do after graduation. Chris is split between getting a job and going to grad school, which means we’re split between selling the house and moving, and staying in town. The dilemma lies in that we won’t know what we’re doing in terms of school/job until April (when he hears back from the schools he's applied to). It takes a while to sell a house. If we put it on the market now, we might sell, and be homeless during the last school year, which could take a toll on Chris’ freakishly high GPA. If we wait, we might have to move without having the house sold. We contacted a realtor in late June and got the ball rolling on getting the house on the market. She wanted to get it listed early this month, but we agreed that we wouldn’t be ready until the beginning of August. She is going to be pissed when we tell her that we might not sell at after all, at least for the time being. I can deal with a disgruntled realtor. In our small town, where you run into everyone everywhere, I’ve become a master at avoiding eye contact. At least we’ve cleaned up a bunch and done a bunch of repairs. She’ll have to wait a while to get her commission, and that’s if we even decide to sell.
I might be dreading the end of summer because I know what it means for me: Weekends alone with the pooches and Netflix. I’ve also got some good books I haven’t read yet. I don’t mind doing all the cooking, cleaning and laundry. I actually look forward to it. It won’t be so bad. I’ll just miss Chris’ face during the day and during the evening. I am looking forward to what the semester represents: one more of everything before graduation. One more Labor Day, Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years, Birthdays, and then we’ll know without uncertainty where we’ll be for the next either two years or maybe even more. Chris’ graduation also coincides with my five year anniversary with my employer, which means I will be a vested employee. I could quit if I want to. I can wait that long.
